GODP raises awareness in maintaining marine resources of Sibugay Province
June 03, 2015
"The Green our DOLE Program (GODP) does not only seek for a green workplace and is not limited to the four walls of the office, but it also supports other initiatives outside workplaces to complement efforts under the National Greening Program of the government." These are words from the Department of Labor and Employment Regional Office-9 Director Sisinio B. Cano in his pursuit to advocate GODP in the region.
A purposeful summer was spent by DOLE beneficiaries of GIP, TUPAD and SPES as they joined hands in cleaning up Buluan Island Marine Sanctuary (BIMS). The Marine Sanctuary is part of the LGU-Ipil environment conservation movement called "Ipil Pride Campaign". The campaign encouraged participation of the public, government agencies, non-government agencies and other stakeholders in protecting and promoting Buluan Island Marine Sanctuary. As a way of supporting the local government's campaign, DOLE-9 Regional Director Sisinio B. Cano, thru DOLE Zamboanga Sibugay Field Office and in collaboration with PESO-Ipil through its PESO Manager Mila V. Merle, took the initiative to conduct coastal clean-up last May 16, 2015. The goal of the activity is to help the LGU in maintaining cleanliness of the beaches in the island while at the same time raise awareness to the DOLE beneficiaries of the importance of protecting marine resources.
The coastal clean-up was participated by two DOLE personnel, 6 DOLE-TUPAD beneficiaries, 3 SPES grantees and 2 DOLE-GIP. Garbage like floating plastic particles, drift woods, and other wastes sucked by sea currents were removed and put into sacks for proper disposal. After the clean-up, the beneficiaries enjoyed a small salu-salo and took the liberty of swimming the pristine waters of the island.
