Overseas Employment for the Internally-Displaced Persons of Zamboanga City

May 16, 2014 - The Department of Labor and Employment Regional Office IX through its very supportive Regional Director Sisinio B. Cano, spearheaded the implementation of an overseas employment facilitation for the Internally-Displaced Persons affected by the September 2013 Zamboanga Siege upon the request of the City Mayor of Zamboanga City.

The project was formalized by a memorandum of agreement between Honorable Labor Secretary Rosalinda-Dimapilis Baldoz of DOLE and Honorable Mayor of Zamboanga City Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar last March 19, 2014 during the secretary’s visit in the city.

The agreement enabled the convergence of key government agencies such as the DOLE Zamboanga Field Office, the National Reintegration Center for Overseas Filipino Workers, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, Technical Education Skills Development Authority, Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, Local Government unit of Zamboanga City, and the private recruitment group such as the Association of the Zamboanga Peninsula Recruitment Agencies resulting to enhanced support for the rehabilitation and recovery efforts of Zamboanga City and provide access to emergency employment by way of overseas deployment of the Internally-Displaced Persons of the eight (8) most affected barangays namely Arena Blanco, Kasanyangan, Mampang, Mariki, Sta. Barbara, Sta. Catalina, Talon Talon and Rio Hondo.

Those who will specifically benefit the overseas employment facilitation are the males 18-35 years old of the above- mentioned barangays who possess the skills for the construction or service industry and are willing to undergo basic or upgrading skills training.

Registration and skills profiling of the IDPs initially commenced during the Labor Day Jobs Fair celebration last May 1, 2014 at the WMSU covered court and is continuously being done in the selected affected barangays, IDPs transitory sites, in the the POEA regional extension unit IX and the DOLE Regional Office IX prior to the ending of the project implementation which will be on December 31, 2014.

Qualified residents of the affected mentioned barangays may inquire and register at the DOLE Regional Office IX located at 3rd Floor QNS Building, Veterans Avenue Extension, Tumaga, Zamboanga City.
