Dipolog City – The SPES Program of the Department of Labor and Employment helped realize the dream of Ruth O. Quintero, from Piao, Roxas, Zamboanga del Norte, to become an accountant. Ruth’s father was already a retired security guard when she entered college while her mother is a housewife. Being the youngest in the family, her education would have been sacrificed to give way to her elder siblings. But because of her exemplary background in high school where she graduated as the class valedictorian and her active participation in extra-curricular activities, she has availed of a half academic scholarship grant from St. Vincent’s College (SVC) in Dipolog City. Despite this scholarship grant, it was still difficult for her to meet the remaining half of her school fees obligation and other school requirements as her father was only receiving a meager monthly pension which is already thinly spread covering the needs of their family.

Through the assistance of Mrs. Sylvia B. Sumondong, RGC, the SVC PESO Manager, Ruth was able to avail of a SPES Grant from DOLE on her second year in college and until her fourth year. It was also Mrs. Sylvia Sumondong who took notice of her positive attitude towards work and school responsibilities. Ruth is not only intelligent but she is also a very dedicated and hardworking individual who even went to volunteer duty at the Guidance Counselor’s office even before she became a SPES grantee. She became the Secretary of the Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants and the Vice-President of the Supreme Student Council of SVC. She provided various services in the Guidance & Counseling Center and at the SVC PESO office as a filer and an encoder.

The SPES grant from DOLE provided a big help for Ruth in meeting her financial obligation for her school fees, projects, books and other requirements she needed for school. Through the grant, she was able to hurdle the obstacles she faced and helped her a lot in achieving her dreams.

Ultimately, on October 15, 2011, she finished her degree in Bachelor of Science in Accountancy with honors as a Cum Laude proving her once again that her duties and responsibilities in school can still be fully met despite her busy work as an assistant. And through the recommendation of Mrs. Sylvia Sumondong, she became the Auditor of Katipunan Bank covering 16 branches in the Visayas and Mindanao region. Currently she is now with the branch account division at the Dumaguete City branch of the said bank.

The story of Ruth Quintero serves as an inspiration to the new SPES grantees and to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.
