DOLE and Provincial Government provide employment opportunities to 270 students in Sibugay through SPES

When going to school, making assignments, doing research and other school activities are over, most students look forward to have a good, happy vacation – travelling, hanging-out with the peers, surfing at internet cafés, and cooling-off at the malls. However, there are some students who utilize their summer vacation to expand their career options through employment opportunities provided by the DOLE and the Provincial Government of Zamboanga Sibugay through the Special Program for the Employment of Students or SPES. Majority of them use their SPES salary to pay for their school tuition fees, school uniforms, shoes, and other school supplies.

Pursuant to Republic Act No. 9547 or “An Act Strengthening and Expanding the coverage of the Special Program for the Employment of Students, Amending for the purpose, provisions of R.A. No. 7323 of 1992, the Provincial Government of Zamboanga Sibugay through the Provincial Public Employment Service Office supervised by then outgoing PESO Manager Nelsie P. Lazo, implemented the SPES program to help some 270 poor but deserving students coming from the 16 municipalities of this province to help them pursue their education. The summer work program started last April 2013 to June 2013.

These students were able to experience a meaningful summer job as they were given the chance to work in the different municipalities as office workers, data encoders, researchers, and utility workers. They also participated in tree planting activities as part of the greening program of the LGUs. This program has also enabled SPES beneficiaries to value the dignity of work and learn the basics of public service and governance.

OIC-Regional Director Sisinio B. Cano, DOLE IX together with the Zamboanga Sibugay Field Office Personnel turned- over the 40% (DOLE Counterpart) SPES Checks amounting to FIVE HUNDRED TWENTY NINE THOUSAND SEVEN HUNDRED (Php529,700.00) benefiting 270 students all over the province, to Governor Wilter Yap-Palma with the presence of the new Provincial PESO Manager Mrs. Esther R. Yokuya together with the different Department Heads of the PLGU.

The strengthening of the SPES program through the expanded coverage now allows for a year-round implementation which resulted to the extended implementation of SPES in the PLGU until the second week of October 2013. There are about 230 poor but deserving college students who will benefit from this program, amounting to more than Php 400,000 which target to help them in their enrollment and tuition fee payments in time for the second semester.
