Thu, Oct 17, 2013 (Source: ZSP)
From JuIy 22 to August 15, 2013, 20 schools got involved in the conduct of the Career Guidance Week 2013. In line with DepEd Order No. 25 series of 2013 or the Conduct of Career Guidance Week for high school students, the Department of Education, Division of ZamboangaSibugay in partnership with the Department of Labor and Employment Zamboanga Sibugay Field Office (DOLE ZSFO), successfully implemented this development program designed to assist 7,259 high school students and their parents in exploring and choosing the right career path for their children or the graduating high school students.

The program is aimed at directing career path of students through career advocacy and awareness of the current labor market demands to help them in making the right decision for a career choice. The career coaching activity is also in response to the call of the government to intensify career guidance among high school students to mitigate the perennial problem of unemployment caused by job mismatch.

There were several activities lined-up bythe Guidance Counselors for the week- long celebration which was focused on student-job matching but each school was given the free hand to design creatively their Career Guidance Week in accordance with DepEd Order No. 25.

All throughout the Division of Zamboanga Sibugay, the Guidance Counselors were able to reach out the following:

NO. SCHOOLS INVOLVED/CONDUCTED NO. OF STUDENTS ATTENDED NO. OF PARENTS ATTENDED NO. OF TEACHERS PARTICIPATED NO. OF GUEST SPEAKERS NO. OF PARTICIPATING COLLEGES
206,3279323106010

Considering that this activity was only conducted for the first time, the results were very positive, especially so with the active participation of the other agencies like the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the Local Government Units, Colleges and Universities and Private Companies that have an interest in the career development of students.

The participants, especially the parents of the high school students were very glad that they had taken part in this activity as it served as an eye opener for them in relation to the important role in helping their children choose the right career choice based on their interests, personalities, and the demands of the labor market.

It is expected that in the years to come this activity will gain popularity among students and parents and more support from different government and non-government agencies that had interest in the career development of the future labor force of the country.
