DOLE Zamboanga Sibugay participates in Coconut for Sustainability Study Mission
May 30, 2017
The Department of Labor and Employment Zamboanga del Sur Field Office (DOLE-ZSFO) takes part in the one-day Study Mission cum Orientation on the benefits of Coconut on May 4, 2017 sponsored by the Philippine Coconut Authority Zamboanga Research Center in San Ramon, Zamboanga City.
The study mission was a collective activity with the technical working group for Coconut where DOLE ZSFO is a member. It aimed to educate the participants on the many emerging innovations and beneficial uses of the coconut which is often dubbed as the 'tree of life' since its fruit, leaves and even trunk can be used for different purposes.
The group had exposure to the different processing facilities in the two divisions, non-food and food. Under the food division is the processing of Virgin Coconut Oil and Coconut/Coco Sugar which is gaining popularity among health buffs as a sugar substitute for its low glycemic index suitable for diabetics.
As for the non-food division, the participants were oriented on GEOMAT, coconut fiber board and hollow blocks production which make use of the coconut coir (fiber). These products are enhanced by additives which make them stronger and eventually when introduced to the mainstream market will be a cheaper alternative to common building products.
The emergence of new technologies that enhance coconut products and its by-products has paved the way to employment opportunities and DOLE will be in the frontline to ensure the efficiency and sustainability of decent employment in this industry. (END/Corazon Fatima P. Penaranda-DOLE ZSFO)
