DOLE-9: All is set for the 2015 Labor Day Celebration

The Department of Labor and Employment Regional Office-9 (DOLE RO-9) is moving every efforts to celebrate the 2015 Labor Day. With the theme, "Disenteng Trabaho at Kabuhayan, Alay Natin Sa Bayan," DOLE-9 have planned various significant activities to honor and pay special tribute to the Filipino working class.
In Zamboanga City, "El Fiesta del Dia de Obrero" (The Feast of Labor Day) will be held at the ZAMBOECOZONE and Freeport Authority in Talisayan, Zamboanga City. It envisage to be a grand celebration as it also marks the 25th Anniversary of the Zamboanga City Tripartite Industrial Peace Council (ZCTIPC), with the Department of Labor and Employment Zamboanga City Field Office (ZCFO) as the coordinating Field Office and with the partnership of the Zamboanga City Local Government Unit.
Distinct from Labor Day observances practised by other cities where demonstrations and marches are the norm, the celebration of Labor Day in Zamboanga has always been an event where thousands of workers gather to commemorate the significance of labor and revel the importance of employment in a festive and fostering atmosphere. This year, the highlight of the celebration is the conduct of Job Fair, which, as of April 20, 2015, a total of 24 employers (12 local and 12 overseas) signified their intention to participate. The number of vacancies pegged to a total of 27, 293 (1,441 local and 25,913 overseas) vacancies.
The fiesta-like affair will also feature various festive and summer activities to include: the Diskwento Fair/ Market Market/ Livelihood Fair; ballgames and board game competitions; TESDA demos, trainings and free services; medical and dental outreach; military static displays and parachute drop exhibition; a 5-Kilometer fun run; a Zumba Hour; "Boodle Fight" for the job seekers sponsored by the different canned Sardines and Tuna factories in the city, and will cap with an evening entertainment featuring several live bands.
As a kick-off activity, a Labor Day Press Conference was held in the Information Office of the Zamboanga City Hall last April 17, 2015. The event was attended by DOLE RO-9 Regional Director Sisinio B. Cano, Assistant Regional Director Yahya A. Centi, Engr. Wesley D. Tan (ZCFO) and its family of agencies, Dir. Hassan Gabra T. Jumdain (OWWA), Cerna I. Ahmad (ECC), Reynaldo S. Foncardas (NCMB), Nora A. Siason (PRC), Joel M. Ijirani (RTWPB), Zamboanga City Mayor Ma. Isabelle Climaco-Salazar, Zamboanga Ecozone Chairperson Christopher Lawrence S. Arnuco, and representatives from the labor and management sectors.
The Zamboanga del Norte Field Office (ZDNFO) will also be conducting a Job Fair to be held at Dapitan City Gymnasium, Zamboanga del Norte. ZDNFO reported that as of April 20, 2015, a total of 14 employers (4 local and 10 overseas) will participate, with a total of 22,320 (61 local and 22,259 overseas) vacancies.
In Zamboanga Sibugay, the Zamboanga Sibugay Field Office (ZSFO) is preparing for a three-day Diskwento Fair which will cater huge sale items for the Sibugaynons, just in time for the opening of classes come school year 2015-2016.
Meantime, in Isabela City, spearheading the Labor Day activity is the Isabela City Field Office (ICFO) with these series of activities: Forum on Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) and Gender and Development advocacies.
In Zamboanga del Sur, the Zamboanga del Sur Field Office (ZDSFO) will be turning over Livelihood grants under the DOLE Integrated Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program (DILEEP) amounting to 1.2M. Kabuhayan Starter Kits (KSK) will also be distributed to 34 parents of child laborers and a Diskwento Fair in the malls of Pagadian City will mark the Labor Day celebration.
In partnership with the DOLE family of agencies, DOLE RO-9 is endeavouring to make this year's Labor Day celebration a memorable and successful event.
